History: Wiki link.
Canon Point: Post ending.

Personality:
At first, Shuyin might seem to be all sinister and destructive things, but in reality there is more to him than that. There are different facets to his personality, and he’ll act differently according to who he’s currently around. Shuyin’s a fighter, and a lethal one, but he despises weapons that kill. In some ways, really, Shuyin aims at being both a preserver and destroyer. He wishes to preserve Lenne and his wellbeing and happiness, but he will destroy whatever gets in the way of that happiness. He doesn’t approve of the war, looking down on people who do, and when it starts to interfere with his own life he does decide to end it himself. Fight fire with fire, was it?

On a more positive note, his reactions do show he can have a take charge personality in times of stress.

Shuyin has a more reckless and impulsive side as well. During the war between Zanarkand and Bevelle, when Zanarkand’s summoners were being drafted, Shuyin’s girlfriend, Lenne, was drafted thanks to her talent in summoning. Rather than consider things carefully, Shuyin charged in and tried to awaken Vegnagun, Bevelle’s most dangerous weapon. Things took a turn for the worse, but it shows that when feeling overwhelmed or uncertain, Shuyin is more likely to rely on his emotions and turn for an extreme solution rather than take the time to think things through and look for the best solution. This is an extreme example, but even later on many of the things Shuyin says reveal a mindset more set in terms of absolutes.

Not everything about Shuyin is despair. He recognizes some of the precious things in Spira—the protective side he shows toward Lenne proof of that. However, a thousand years of wondering and witnessing the tragedy he experienced being re-played over and over again has been debilitating to his mind and emotions. He still feels some compassion, but like the rest of him, that has become twisted. He longs to end the misery he suffered and has witnessed others suffer as well so that he and Lenne can finally rest. Shuyin will use drastic tactics to achieve his goal. He’ll possess comrades and get them to turn on one another, and he probably enjoys it to some extent. Why wouldn’t he? Zanarkand’s just a ghost city now, making everyone else on Spira his enemy.

Not much is known about Shuyin’s relationship with Lenne, besides that they were together and loved eachother deeply. However, they both have an affinity for music, Lenne being a songstress and Shuyin shown to be very proficient and playing the organ like instrument used to control Vegnagun.

Despite everything he’s been through, Shuyin is at times capable of seeming like a nice, normal guy, and he probably used to be just that. He’s a man who meant well and experienced a thousand years of torment. That normal, saner side of him has been dampened and sits in pieces, but it still shows up every once in a while. Shuyin might be a shadow of the person he used to be, like the Fayth described him, but elements of his personality still exist…the fact that he was able to move on with Lenne once they found eachother is proof of that.

Skills and Abilities: Shuyin’s fighting style resembles the warrior class, but he’s agile and prefers an onslaught of quick, relentless hits. His style is fluid, and even acrobatic, considering he often does a few flips while he attacks. He has four special attacks:

Spinning Cut: Shuyin flips himself in the air, carving down an enemy with his sword.

Hit and Run: An attack used for multiple enemies. Shuyin runs the enemies through with his sword, skidding across the ground and sprinting at them for a short amount of time.

Force Rain: Shuyin runs up at an enemy, kicking off at them. While in midair, he gathers energy with his sword, and aims it at his enemy. Once it hits, the attack does a lot of damage, shaking the ground around his target.

Terror of Zanarkand: Shuyin’s most powerful attack. He starts out attacking one enemy with a relentless onslaught of hits, stunning and damaging the enemy. Jumping in the air, he uses a Blitzball to kick at the enemy in a final, powerful attack.

When he was an unsent, Shuyin was able to possess people, provided they already had a strong sense of negative emotions. Since he uses a Blitzball for one special attack and his outfit resembles a Blitzball uniform, he might have been a Blitzball player. He is also musically gifted, seeing as he was able to play what appeared to be an instrument similar to an organ in order to control Vegnagun with little difficulty.

First Person Sample:

Lenne,

Days and nights have melted into a blur, leaving me wondering whether they’re real, or just some figment made up by my own mind desperate for some sense of respite from the replaying images. Must I be forced to watch you die, several times within a few minutes? Or is that the only thing that’s real? I’m not really sure anymore…but I see my hands, and feet. I can walk, and move, so I’m sure you can too.

They’re hiding you from me, Lenne.

Occasionally there are gaps, breaks, voices and strangers. One of them had some parchment and pen on them. They won’t be using it any time soon. That’s how I’m writing to you. Maybe seeing it with my eyes helps me know that it’s possible you will too, someday, once I find you.
I can only hope you don’t have to see the same things I see all the time. Why would you be forced to watch my failing, when I was the one unable to save you?

Just wait. You are my strength right now, but this time I will be strong enough to become yours.
Third Person Sample:

Shuyin sat in front of the keyboard, ignoring the world. Time had passed, yet it still felt weird to have a body of his own without having to wonder how long it would last before he had to possess someone again. His feelings on the matter were mixed. In some ways, it was better. He didn’t have to rely on them anymore, he could use his own body. He wouldn’t have to see their faces, or hear their voices distort his words and expressions. On the other hand, he had delighted in making them move and speak against their will. They were tools of the same people who had murdered him and Lenne, and in those moments they were his own tools turned against the people they called comrades – his enemies.

His fingers danced right above the keys, never quite connecting. Nothing had changed back on Spira, and no amount of romantic lyrics or sincere gazes would change that. The only difference was Shuyin had learned not to care. A thousand years of wandering, alone and fearing the worst for Lenne had left him hanging from a weary, frayed thread. It had taken seeing her, and hearing the words from her own mouth to get him to rest. It wasn’t right, and it didn’t undo their suffering, but it had been too long. He could accept it because he would be with Lenne.

Then he woke up, and he was alone again.

He rested his hand down. It turned out even that would be taken from him. The Dragons could recreate Spira, to the most miniscule detail, but they hadn’t brought back Lenne. Why had they brought back him, and not her? He wasn’t any more deserving than her—if anything, it was the other way around. It felt like some twisted game, where history repeated itself over and over in the same endless cycle. Familiarity wasn’t always comforting. He pressed his digits down, creating a harsh, jarring noise that startled any people nearby. What good was any of this if Lenne wasn’t here? It was just the same as before. He had never asked for any of this. He hadn’t asked to be revived, he was perfectly fine where he was.

Why had they done it? Maybe they weren’t the same as the Fayth. Did it really matter? He had to take matters into his own hands. How else could he live while knowing Lenne didn’t have the same chance as him? He had to learn about the power that was used to revive him, and wield it himself.

“Lenne…just hold on, and I’ll see you soon.”

If Shuyin had learned anything, it was that he was in control of how things turned out now, and no one else. Anyone who tried would quickly learn to regret their mistake.
